How the External CO₂ System Works

product-800-800

When the operator activates the control mechanism, the puncture assembly opens the CO₂ cartridge. Compressed carbon dioxide flows into the main cylinder and increases internal pressure. The pressure then transfers the extinguishing agent through the internal siphon tube, discharge hose, and nozzle.

This process creates a controlled discharge stream without requiring the main cylinder to remain pressurized throughout its service life.

Compared with stored-pressure designs, the extinguishing agent cylinder remains under atmospheric conditions during storage. Pressure is generated only when the extinguisher is activated.

Main Components

Main Agent Cylinder

The main cylinder stores dry powder or foam extinguishing agent. The cylinder body is typically manufactured from welded carbon steel and designed according to pressure vessel requirements. The cylinder contains an internal siphon tube that transfers extinguishing agent toward the discharge hose during operation.

External CO₂ Cartridge

The CO₂ cartridge stores compressed carbon dioxide used to pressurize the main cylinder during activation. Because the cartridge remains separate from the extinguishing agent cylinder, maintenance personnel can inspect, replace, or recharge the CO₂ unit without opening the main cylinder.

Valve Assembly

The valve assembly controls activation and seals the extinguisher during storage. The valve directs CO₂ flow from the cartridge into the extinguishing agent cylinder.

Discharge Hose and Nozzle

The hose transfers extinguishing agent from the cylinder to the fire location. The nozzle focuses the discharge stream and allows the operator to direct the extinguishing agent toward the base of the fire.

Trolley Frame and Wheel Assembly

The steel frame supports the weight of the extinguisher during transportation and deployment. Large-capacity units may exceed 50kg of total system weight. The wheel assembly reduces lifting requirements and allows a single operator to move the extinguisher across warehouse floors, loading yards, and industrial facilities.

Why Choose an External CO₂ Design?

01. Separate Storage of Driving Gas and Agent

The extinguishing agent cylinder does not remain continuously pressurized during storage. This structure reduces long-term stress on the main cylinder and isolates the driving gas system from the extinguishing agent chamber.

02. Easier Maintenance Procedures

The CO₂ cartridge can be inspected or replaced independently. Maintenance personnel do not need to recharge the entire extinguisher when only the driving gas system requires servicing.

03. Suitable for Large-Capacity Fire Extinguishers

As extinguisher size increases, maintaining stored pressure inside large cylinders becomes more demanding. External cartridge systems are commonly selected for 25kg, 50kg, and larger industrial extinguishers because pressure is generated only when needed.

04. Reduced Risk of Pressure Loss

Stored-pressure extinguishers depend on long-term pressure retention. External cartridge systems keep the driving gas isolated until activation, reducing the possibility of unnoticed pressure loss inside the main cylinder.

Typical Applications

01

Fuel Storage Facilities

Fuel transfer stations, diesel storage tanks, and fuel distribution areas contain combustible liquids that may require larger extinguishing agent volumes than portable extinguishers can provide. A trolley extinguisher allows operators to transport a larger extinguishing reserve directly to the incident location.

02

Chemical Processing Plants

Chemical facilities often store flammable liquids, solvents, and process chemicals. External CO₂ cartridge systems are commonly positioned near storage zones and production areas where rapid first-response firefighting capability is required.

03

Warehouses and Logistics Centers

Warehouses contain combustible packaging materials, pallets, plastics, and stored goods. The larger discharge capacity of trolley extinguishers helps support initial fire control before fixed suppression systems activate or emergency services arrive.

04

Ports and Marine Facilities

Dockside operations frequently involve fuel handling equipment, cargo loading systems, and mobile machinery. The trolley structure allows extinguishers to be moved through open operational areas where fixed extinguishing systems may not be available.

05

Mining and Heavy Equipment Areas

Mining vehicles, generators, hydraulic systems, and fuel storage equipment create fire risks associated with combustible liquids and machinery operation. Large-capacity extinguishers provide a larger extinguishing reserve than handheld units.

Manufacturer

Standards

Inspection and Maintenance

Routine inspection should verify:

CO₂ cartridge condition

Safety pin integrity

Valve sealing condition

Hose condition

Nozzle condition

Cylinder exterior condition

Wheel assembly operation

Potential failure modes include damaged hose connections, seal deterioration, cartridge leakage, and mechanical damage caused by improper handling.

Any discharged extinguisher should be serviced and recharged before returning to operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between a stored-pressure trolley extinguisher and an external CO₂ model?

A: Stored-pressure units keep the cylinder pressurized during storage. External CO₂ models store the driving gas separately and generate pressure only during activation.

Q: Can the CO₂ cartridge be replaced separately?

A: Yes. The cartridge can typically be replaced without replacing the extinguishing agent cylinder.

Q: Which extinguishing agents are available?

A: Depending on project requirements, units may be supplied with dry powder, foam, or other extinguishing media.

Q: Why are external cartridge systems used on larger extinguishers?

A: The design allows pressure generation during operation rather than maintaining continuous pressure inside large-capacity cylinders.

Q: Can OEM branding be supplied?

A: Yes. Product labels, packaging, manuals, and markings can be customized.

Q: Are replacement parts available?

A: Yes. Replacement hoses, valves, cartridges, nozzles, and related maintenance components can be supplied.
